Rodin Cars welcomed reigning W Series champion, Williams F1 development driver and Aston Martin GT race car driver, Jamie Chadwick, to an exclusive five-day test session at its private facility in Mt Lyford, New Zealand. Jamie’s driving talent and technical ability saw her drive the McLaren 570S GT4 and F3 single-seater to get used to the new track layout at Rodin Cars before jumping in a brand new McLaren Senna GTR. After the initial excitement it was into the GP2 race machine – formerly raced by Nelson Piquet Jr in the 2005/2006 season. This all culminated in the main event: the 300km/h Rodin FZED. Chadwick used the track time for a number of test and development sessions and benchmarked the FZED against an original GP2 car. So which car came out on top? Watch how it all unfolded in this full-length film of Jamie’s visit to New Zealand at the beginning of March, 2020. Full press release below; Kiwi Teenage Driver (Louis Sharp) One Step Closer To Formula One Dream! 14-year-old racing driver Louis Sharp has today moved a step closer to realising his Formula One dream, being confirmed as a driver for the prestigious motor racing team Carlin in the upcoming 2022 British Formula 4 season. The Christchurch teen will head to England this weekend to begin testing with Carlin, the same team kiwi driver Liam Lawson has joined for the 2022 Formula 2 season. Louis Sharp says he’s still pinching himself he's joining such an illustrious team. “It's all a dream come true. I'm excited to kick off my journey with Carlin, the same team as Liam where the likes of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo also raced,"  says Louis. Sharp and Lawson's close links don't end there, both are being backed by Rodin Cars in Mt Lyford north of Canterbury. Rodin’s Founder David Dicker, who has an eye for spotting young motorsport talent, was instantly impressed with Sharp during the Super GT NZ Series in January. “The talent is evident, as is Louis passion, I am happy to support young motorsport enthusiasts helping themselves to succeed,” says Dicker Despite his age, Sharp’s rise up the motorsport ranks has been meteoric. At 12, he was New Zealand’s most successful age group karter, claiming more national titles and series wins than any other age group racer. His success on the world stage also earned him selection into the FIA Academy as one of the world’s most promising talents. He was also hand-picked by kiwi Supercars ace Fabian Coulthard for the Australia Young Driver Scholarship. Coulthard says the 14-year-old is defying his age. "I've watched Louis' performances over the years, and he has impressed with not only his ability on the track but also his maturity. I know Louis will get the job done wherever he races," says Coulthard. Incredibly after switching from karts and making his Formula Ford debut in October 2021 Sharp is already sitting on top of the championship leaderboard. And just last month he tested the Rodin Cars Formula 3 car, breaking the F3 Rodin track record previously held by World Champion and professional British driver Jamie Chadwick. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to step into Rodin Formula 3 car. It was heavier and much faster than my Formula Ford to drive, but I really liked it, especially the way the downforce worked when I pushed it hard through the corners to make it fast”, says Sharp. It's that skill and desire that Rodin Cars founder David Dicker believes will see Sharp go all the way and represent New Zealand in Formula One within the next 3 to 5 years. “It’s really up to Louis where this journey will lead him. I have merely absorbed the financial restraints, enabling Louis to focus on what he does best. I have full faith Louis will put New Zealand on the international motorsport map,” says Dicker Despite such lofty predictions, Sharp is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “My goal is F1, I know there is a lot of hard work required to make it but this support means I can concentrate on being the best I can be on the track,” says Sharp. Now the next step in the journey begins in the Formula 4 series in the UK starting next month. However, Sharp's debut will be delayed by one race as he waits to turn 15 in May... the legal age to drive in the competition. Lawson’s time of 1m23.75s was clocked during a lunchtime demonstration run and as such will not be officiated, leaving his 2019 lap time of 1m29.910 as the official benchmark. After setting the lap time Lawson quipped he’d “given it a decent go.” “The car felt really good, the balance was good, I think we were slightly high in the tyre pressures because I started to lose the rears towards the end of the last lap especially, but I’m happy with the fastest lap. It was nice to show people how fast the car is,” said Lawson. “Turn 3, the massive sort of sweeper with the wall around the outside, in there I was surprised by how I could keep carrying more and more speed and the car was dealing with it quite nicely.” An official lap record can only be established during an actual race, which Lawson did on his Toyota Racing Series debut at the Cromwell-based track almost three years ago. This was the first time the Rodin FZED had been seen on a public race track in New Zealand since a cameo appearance at Ruapuna several years ago, and proves it is the fastest single-seater racing car in the country. But could the lap record holder have gone even faster? “With a new set of tyres and a proper set-up from more track time, I’m sure there’s another 1 or 2-seconds. It wouldn’t be much more than that,” added the 19-year-old Red Bull Junior, who is backed by Rodin cars in Formula 2. With time restraints from the racing programme, Lawson only had three laps in the lunchtime break in which to record his fastest time. Highlands is the second successive race track the Rodin FZED has set an unofficial lap record. Late last year at Donington, UK it went under their official fastest lap time. The Rodin FZED is powered by a Cosworth GPV8 producing 675hp and is built at Rodin Cars manufacturing and test track facility at Mt Lyford. Attending Highlands for the weekend was more than just a record-setting time for Lawson who enjoyed being back at his “favourite race circuit in the world.” “The whole weekend at Highlands was fun for me. I had my whole family down here as well and the support from everybody was really, really cool. The 19-year-old Red Bull Junior recorded his flying lap of 1-minute 11.2-seconds during a lunchtime demonstration. Dixon’s benchmark of 1m 15.8s was set in a Formula Holden Reynard 92D. It was the first time Lawson had driven on the Christchurch-based circuit since he took a clean-sweep of Formula Ford races there in January 2017, on his way to winning the New Zealand title. “I knew the track in the back of my mind but it was way tighter, bumpier and twister than I’d remembered it,” said Lawson afterwards. “In the FZED, corners like Pothole, which are really high speed, it’s quite nice to open it up through there and see what it can do. “And then there’s the massive long main straight before a big braking zone. So much fun and a really cool track to drive.” A week prior Lawson went under his own lap record at the Highlands circuit near Cromwell by 6-seconds but at Ruapuna, changeable weather on Sunday prevented a second day of running to see if he could go even faster. “A pity we didn’t get another shot but I think the lap time we did was quite good. The Rodin team had saved a set of new Pirelli tyres for the second day but with rain on the day it was decided to leave the car in the pit garage. “If we had another go with another set of new tyres, maybe another half-second quicker, but that’s about all,” said Lawson. “I think a mid to high-10 would have been achievable.” Before Lawson returns to Europe in just over three weeks to prepare for the Formula 2 season he may, pending Covid restrictions, have one more lap record attempt in the FZED at Hampton Downs on February 12-13. “I hope we get to the North Island to show people there how quick this car is. It’s been great to show so many people in the South Island the Rodin FZED, let’s hope we can do the same up there,” he said from Christchurch. Kiwi Teenage Driver (Louis Sharp) One Step Closer To Formula One Dream! 14-year-old racing driver Louis Sharp has today moved a step closer to realising his Formula One dream, being confirmed as a driver for the prestigious motor racing team Carlin in the upcoming 2022 British Formula 4 season. The Christchurch teen will head to England this weekend to begin testing with Carlin, the same team kiwi driver Liam Lawson has joined for the 2022 Formula 2 season. Louis Sharp says he’s still pinching himself he's joining such an illustrious team. “It's all a dream come true. I'm excited to kick off my journey with Carlin, the same team as Liam where the likes of Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo also raced,"  says Louis. Sharp and Lawson's close links don't end there, both are being backed by Rodin Cars in Mt Lyford north of Canterbury. Rodin’s Founder David Dicker, who has an eye for spotting young motorsport talent, was instantly impressed with Sharp during the Super GT NZ Series in January. “The talent is evident, as is Louis passion, I am happy to support young motorsport enthusiasts helping themselves to succeed,” says Dicker Despite his age, Sharp’s rise up the motorsport ranks has been meteoric. At 12, he was New Zealand’s most successful age group karter, claiming more national titles and series wins than any other age group racer. His success on the world stage also earned him selection into the FIA Academy as one of the world’s most promising talents. He was also hand-picked by kiwi Supercars ace Fabian Coulthard for the Australia Young Driver Scholarship. Coulthard says the 14-year-old is defying his age. "I've watched Louis' performances over the years, and he has impressed with not only his ability on the track but also his maturity. I know Louis will get the job done wherever he races," says Coulthard. Incredibly after switching from karts and making his Formula Ford debut in October 2021 Sharp is already sitting on top of the championship leaderboard. And just last month he tested the Rodin Cars Formula 3 car, breaking the F3 Rodin track record previously held by World Champion and professional British driver Jamie Chadwick. “I really enjoyed the opportunity to step into Rodin Formula 3 car. It was heavier and much faster than my Formula Ford to drive, but I really liked it, especially the way the downforce worked when I pushed it hard through the corners to make it fast”, says Sharp. It's that skill and desire that Rodin Cars founder David Dicker believes will see Sharp go all the way and represent New Zealand in Formula One within the next 3 to 5 years. “It’s really up to Louis where this journey will lead him. I have merely absorbed the financial restraints, enabling Louis to focus on what he does best. I have full faith Louis will put New Zealand on the international motorsport map,” says Dicker Despite such lofty predictions, Sharp is keeping his feet firmly on the ground. “My goal is F1, I know there is a lot of hard work required to make it but this support means I can concentrate on being the best I can be on the track,” says Sharp. Now the next step in the journey begins in the Formula 4 series in the UK starting next month. However, Sharp's debut will be delayed by one race as he waits to turn 15 in May... the legal age to drive in the competition. More evidence that this young kiwi driver is well ahead of his years and racing towards the big time.
